Introduction
Mechanical-engineering steels are fundamental to the component industry: shafts, gears, crankshafts, bearings, pins, bushings and power-transmission components are machined and heat-treated from these alloys.
Alloy selection depends on load level, the planned heat treatment and part section size. Carbon steels such as SAE 1020 and 1045 perform well in moderate-load applications, while chromium-molybdenum and chromium-nickel-molybdenum grades—SAE 4140, 4340, 8620 and 8640—are used for more highly stressed components.
